Distortion & 'Masking' photographs.

For my first semester in University I decided to look at the idea of 'masking' or distorting people and faces. I looked at Jenny Saville and Lucian Freud's work for inspiration and printed pictures onto vilene which I then distorted with stitch and text. My father passed away when I was young and was interested in exploring how our perceptions of people change once they have gone. This is a picture of Jenny Saville I printed and then stitched into, emphasising the lines, bumps, scars and wrinkles. Lotus Peles Chen was someone who inspired me to work like this. Below is one of his works where she stitched into a newspaper picture. She likes how it is possible to convey emotion with every thread.
