'Daddy' - Sylvia Plath (Printing on to Baking Paper)
For this piece I printed Sylvia Plath's poem 'Daddy' on to baking parchment and then underlayed photographs of my own dad who passed away when I was 14. I could really relate to Plath's poetry so I thought it was really relevant to include it in my own work. I liked the old, distressed, smudgy feel the ink of the words gave to the piece as the ink was still wet when I was handling it. Before uploading it I enhanced the image on photoshop giving it more contrast and stronger hues.
For this piece I overlayed text, film roll and a photograph of my dad with his best friend and melted it between two sheets of cellophane. I really liked the textured plastic that was left on the top after melting the cellophane with an iron. These two pieces where preparatory work for a project I was doing in University. I was looking at distorted memories and translating this into art work by distorting different types of fabrics and materials. I tried melting, stitching, printing, image transferring, painting bondaweb and casting the human body. For me, I've found that the simplest methods are usually the most effective. I am still exploring these ideas in my current project and expanding on these ideas by creating emulsion transfers and pieces of aged wood and continuing to use text and poetry in my work. At the moment I am really interested in Faustian ideas and I am reading 'The picture of Dorian Gray'. I like to have a variety of sources to influence my work and study literature, psychology, human emotion and past experience for which I will base my work on. If you have any questions about me or my work, please don't hesitate to ask.
