Thomas Boyer, 'Reworking the Family Album'

Thomas Boyer is a contemporary photographic artist based in Nevada. He 'reworks' his family album by digitally layering photographs over one another, not to  "reminisce fondly but for a better understanding of family dysfunction". He describes his work as autobiographical and believes his images provide 'visual anchors admidst fragmented details'. Whatever that means.I personally find his work to be very interesting and his images really struck a chord with me. Through editing and reworking these precious images he is as reflecting on these memories and making selective choices on what images to bring to the foreground and which to leave hidden and repressed in the back. By forcing us to strain our eyes to see the ghostly traces in the background and the almost headache we get from doing so seems to be a key metaphor for what he deals with when thinking and reflecting on more painful memories himself. To see more of Boyer's work you can visit: http://www.f22gallery.com/
